What is a backgammon problem?
It is the classic way to study the game: a position, a roll, and one question — what is the best move? Backgammon books and magazines have printed them for decades, because that is where points are won: in the moves you play without thinking.
Here the question comes two to four times in a row. After your move, Black replies, you get new dice, and you have to find the next best move. The dice are fixed in advance: everyone plays the same problem.
How the best move is chosen
Tabladia’s computer — a neural network trained on millions of games — rated every legal move by looking at every possible reply. A problem is only published if the best move is clearly ahead of the second best: no trick questions between two near-equal plays.
A weaker move fails the attempt: the page tells you what it costs, and you start over. For the principles behind these choices — making points, avoiding blots, counting the race — read how to play backgammon.
The weekly leaderboard
A problem solved on your first try, without showing the solution, counts toward the weekly leaderboard, the one that rewards playing regularly. Past problems stay playable for practice; the ones you solved are marked in this browser.

Frequently asked questions
What is a backgammon problem?
A position and a roll: find the best move. Here, after Black’s reply, new dice come and you have to find the best move again, two to four times in a row.
Are the dice the same for everyone?
Yes: the problem’s dice are fixed in advance, so every player faces exactly the same problem.
How do we know it is the best move?
The computer rated every legal move and every possible reply; a problem is kept only if the best move is clearly ahead of all the others.
What if I play a weaker move?
The attempt fails: the page tells you what the move costs, then you start the problem over. The clock keeps running.
Does the doubling cube come into it?
No: problems are about checker play. The cube is for full games, against the computer or with friends.
