Checkers Online

Classic checkers on an 8 × 8 board: jump the computer’s pieces, crown your kings, and leave it without a move. Pick its level, from Easy to Expert, and play right away — free, no sign-up, no download, on desktop and mobile.

Your move

You play Black — Medium level.

Four levels, four opponents

Easy plays half by chance: it sees what its move wins, but gets distracted one move in three — good for learning the rules, or playing with a child. Medium looks three plies ahead and picks among its best moves: it no longer leaves pieces hanging.

Hard sees six plies ahead and won’t fall for simple traps. Expert searches as deep as one second of thinking allows — often a dozen plies — and punishes every loose piece.

How to beat the computer

Control the center: central pieces cover two diagonals and block your opponent’s advance. Keep your back row as long as you can — it stops the other side from crowning.

Above all, look for shots: since jumps are mandatory, giving up a piece forces your opponent’s reply — and often opens a double or triple jump. The daily puzzle trains you to spot them, and our guide to how to play checkers explains how they work.

Multiplayer or 2 players

Side by side on one screen, or each at home with a link you send a friend: multiplayer checkers does both, and the online game plays live on both screens, with no account.

A checkers puzzle every day

Every morning, Tabladia posts a checkers shot: a game position where White moves and wins. You give a piece, Black is forced to jump it (the computer plays the forced jump), then a multiple jump leaves you at least two pieces ahead. Only one move works.

The puzzle counts toward the weekly leaderboard, the one that rewards coming back. Past ones stay playable in the checkers puzzles.

The rules in short

Each player has twelve pieces on the dark squares. A man moves one square diagonally forward and jumps an enemy piece by leaping over it to the empty square beyond — forward only — and keeps jumping if it can. Jumping is mandatory.

A man that reaches the far row is crowned king: it moves and jumps one square in any diagonal direction. You win when your opponent has no move left. Full details in how to play checkers.

Frequently asked questions

Is online checkers free?

Yes, completely: against the computer, two players or multiplayer, with no sign-up, no download and no limit on games.

Which rules do you use?

American checkers (English draughts): an 8 × 8 board, twelve pieces each, Black moves first, mandatory jumps, men jump forward only, and kings move one square at a time.

Do I have to jump?

Yes: if you can jump, you must, and a multiple jump must be completed. You may choose which jump to make when there are several.

How do I play multiplayer with a friend?

Open “Multiplayer checkers”, create the game and send the link (text, chat, email). Your friend opens it and takes White, and the game plays live on both screens. No account needed.

Do I need to download anything?

No: the game runs in your browser, on a computer, phone or tablet. Tap a piece then its destination, or drag it.

Can the computer be beaten?

Yes — but at Expert it looks a dozen plies ahead and leaves nothing hanging. Hold the center, keep your back row, and set up a shot it doesn’t see coming.

Who moves first in checkers?

Black. Against the computer you choose: take Black and move first, or let it start. Between friends, whoever creates the game starts, and the rematch swaps colors.

When is the game a draw?

When forty moves each go by without a jump or a man’s move (only kings moving), or when the same position comes back three times. The board tells you.
